Each day offered a new lesson!
I entered the program without really knowing what to expect, but with a willingness to serve and
be transformed by Christ. I was not particularly knowledgeable or confident about working with
horses or ministry with kids. So, I was super grateful for the opportunity, which was flexible and
varied. From the beginning, I felt very welcomed by the team. I loved the fact that every day I
had the opportunity to experience a different aspect of camp ministry: from serving at the barn,
experimenting with different ways of sharing the Gospel, supporting local youth through the
after-school program, being a volunteer for therapeutic riding’s session, and serving in the
kitchen—each day offered a new lesson.
The Bible studies and leadership classes were particularly deep and thought-provoking,
providing a strong foundation to feel equipped for leadership.
Of course, ministry life, due to the dedication and sacrificial nature of mission work, can
sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why my absolute favorite part of the program my daily 90-
personal time in the word and prayer each morning. It was not always perfect of course,
especially when you have a family, mornings can be messy! But it became my anchor— a time
to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with Christ. Those moments helped me develop a spiritual
discipline that I know will stay with me long after this season at Parkside.
This gap year at Parkside Ranch has been transformational. I’ve gained confidence, resilience,
and, most importantly, I’ve come to see that ministry isn’t about being perfect but being present,
willing, and trusting that God will do the rest.
So, if you’re considering taking a leap of faith like I did, my advice is this: embrace the chaos,
laugh at yourself often, and never underestimate the power of a good pair of boots!
